Birth Mother Support Programmes by Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB)

Year of Funding: May 2023 - current

Sustaining Malaysia’s economic progress, for over 50 years.

Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (Bank Pembangunan) is one of Malaysia’s first and leading Development Financial Institution (DFI), owned by the government. Our focus today is on sustainable practices and impact financing, providing capital for key sectors like infrastructure, maritime, technology, and oil & gas while addressing social issues and developmental priorities.

About the Partnership

Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB) has generously contributed RM325,591 to OrphanCare Foundation’s Mother Support Programme. This sponsorship, made under BPMB’s Zakat Fund, aims to assist single mothers facing challenges by providing them with essential support, and when necessary, helping to place their children under the care of capable and loving families.

As a socially responsible development financial institution, BPMB goes beyond its core mandate of providing impactful development financing for the nation. It also fulfils its social role by fostering strategic partnerships with key organisations to extend financial support to targeted beneficiaries in need.

The Impact

Through the generous contribution of RM325,591 under BPMB’s Zakat Fund, OrphanCare’s Birth Mother Support Programme (BMSP) has transformed the lives of vulnerable single mothers across Peninsular Malaysia. Between May 2023 and December 2024, the programme directly benefited 34 birth mothers and their babies, while indirectly supporting over 30 family members, including parents and siblings.

Empowering Mothers, Strengthening Families

Many of the mothers entered the programme facing isolation and stigma. With counselling, psychosocial guidance, and family mediation, most were able to reconnect with their families and rebuild stable support systems. Several mothers have since married or continued their education while raising their children in nurturing environments.

Emotional and Financial Resilience

The programme’s structured support—covering pre- and post-natal care, livelihood assistance, and mental health counselling—enabled mothers to regain confidence and independence. Over 70% of participants achieved improved emotional wellbeing and developed sustainable livelihoods through skills and financial assistance.

Preventing Child Abandonment

Since its inception, the Birth Mother Support Programme has saved more than 120 babies from abandonment and unsafe conditions. BPMB’s funding played a pivotal role in breaking cycles of desperation by giving mothers safe alternatives and the resources to care for their children.

Stories of Change

One young mother shared,

“I realise my mistake. Thank you so much for this help. Now, I have a better life with my baby and husband.”

Her journey from uncertainty to family stability reflects the life-changing impact of BPMB’s support—turning moments of crisis into new beginnings filled with hope.
